A raging fire has swept through parts of Onitsha Main Market, destroying shops and goods worth millions of naira.

The fire, which broke out at about 6:20 AM at a building along Ifejika Street, by Sokoto Road, quickly spread to nearby structures. The exact cause remains unknown, but panic gripped traders as they rushed to salvage their wares before the flames intensified.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of desperation as shop owners, passersby, and firefighters battled to contain the blaze. Some traders managed to recover a few belongings, while others watched helplessly as their investments went up in smoke.

Confirming the incident, Chukwudi Chiketa, spokesperson for the Anambra State Fire Service**, said emergency responders arrived swiftly after receiving a distress call.

“Our firefighters are on the ground, working tirelessly to bring the situation under control. We urge the public to remain calm,” Chiketa assured.

Although no casualties have been reported, many traders are already counting their losses. Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the fire once the situation is fully contained.
