The First Lady of Kogi State, Hajia Sefinat Usman Ododo, has reaffirmed the state’s commitment to gender equality, women’s empowerment, and the protection of children’s rights.
Speaking at the 2025 International Women’s Day Celebration held at Government House, Lokoja, Mrs. Ododo—represented by the Wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Margaret Eleojo Oyibo—highlighted the state government’s initiatives to promote gender inclusion.
“With the domestication of the Child Rights Act, free education for primary and secondary school students, and a bursary scheme for tertiary students, parents now have greater opportunities to empower their children through education,” she noted.
While commending the progress made by women in Kogi State in business, politics, and education, she stressed that more needs to be done to close the gender gap.
“It is time to accelerate action. Every girl deserves access to quality education, every woman should have equal opportunities in the workplace, and every mother must receive the healthcare she needs,” she stated.
The First Lady called for a united front in achieving gender parity, emphasizing that true progress requires the involvement of both men and women.
“Empowering women strengthens families, uplifts communities, and drives national development. Gender equality is not just a women’s issue—it is a shared responsibility that benefits everyone,” she added.
She reiterated the Ododo administration’s unwavering support for women, outlining key areas such as education, healthcare, and entrepreneurship development as critical to advancing gender equality.
“Beyond today’s celebration, we must take real action. Let’s not just talk about gender equality—let’s practice it, live it, and advocate for it. Together, we can create a society where every woman and girl can reach her full potential,” Mrs. Ododo urged.
She also commended Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for his commitment to creating an inclusive environment for women in Kogi State and expressed appreciation to the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her leadership in advancing women’s empowerment through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).
