Amid growing public scrutiny, former Senate President Bukola Saraki has urged the Senate to launch a transparent investigation into the ongoing dispute between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. He emphasized that an open probe is necessary to protect the Senate’s integrity and restore public confidence in the institution.

Saraki, in a statement released on social media, expressed concern over the allegations and counter-allegations between the two lawmakers, warning that the controversy could damage the Senate’s credibility if left unresolved.

“This matter goes beyond individuals; it is about the sanctity of the Senate as an institution,” Saraki stated. “An open and fair investigation will ensure that the truth prevails, and the Senate’s reputation remains untarnished.”

The controversy erupted when Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of misconduct, sparking heated reactions from both supporters and critics. Akpabio has denied the claims, but the issue has continued to generate debate within and outside the political sphere.

Saraki recalled a similar situation during his tenure as Senate President when he voluntarily subjected himself to an open investigation over allegations regarding an official vehicle. He maintained that a similar precedent should be followed in the current case to ensure transparency.

“The best way to address these allegations is to allow the Senate’s Ethics Committee to conduct a thorough, unbiased probe. Both parties should be given the opportunity to present their cases openly,” Saraki added.

Political analysts believe that how the 10th Senate handles this matter could set a precedent for accountability and gender-related issues in Nigerian politics. As public pressure mounts, all eyes are now on the Senate to see whether it will act decisively or attempt to settle the matter behind closed doors.
