In a move to enhance Nigeria’s higher education landscape, President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of 11 new private universities across the country.
The approval, granted during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Monday, was announced by the President’s Special Adviser on Media & Public Communication, Sunday Dare.
The new institutions are expected to bridge the gap in university admissions, improve access to quality education, and contribute to national development by fostering research and innovation.
The newly licensed universities are:
1. New City University, Ayetoro, Ogun State
2. University of Fortune, Igbotako, Ondo State
3. Eranova University, Mabushi, Abuja
4. Minaret University, Ikirun, Osun State
5. Abubakar Toyin University, Oke-Agba, Kwara State
6. Southern Atlantic University, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State
7. Lens University, Ilemona, Kwara State
8. Monarch University, Iyesi-Ota, Ogun State
9. Tonnie Iredia University of Communication, Benin City, Edo State
10. Isaac Balami University of Aeronautics and Management, Lagos State
11. Kevin Eze University, Mgbowo, Enugu State
With limited admission slots in existing universities, the addition of these institutions is expected to ease the pressure on Nigeria’s higher education system and offer students more options for quality learning.
President Tinubu’s administration has prioritized expanding educational opportunities, recognizing that a robust university system is critical to national development, job creation, and global competitiveness.
Education experts have welcomed the approval, emphasizing the need for strong regulatory oversight to ensure these universities meet high academic and infrastructural standards.
