The legal representatives of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan have disassociated themselves from a controversial letter circulating on social media, purportedly written by ‘Indemnity Partners’ regarding the senator and her husband, Chief Uduaghan.
The letter, dated November 4, 2022, alleged business discrepancies between the couple and made several damaging claims. However, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s solicitors have categorically dismissed the document as fake and inauthentic.
A statement issued by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) B.C. Igwilo urged the public to disregard the letter in its entirety.
“Our attention has been drawn to a letter trending on social media purporting to have been issued from our law firm in respect of our client and her husband.
“We categorically distance ourselves from the purported letter and its alleged contents. That letter is inauthentic and of dubious origin,” the statement read.
The fake letter, with the heading “IN THE MATTER OF BREACH OF PROMISE OF MARRIAGE, POISONING, FINANCIAL LOSS AND INDEBTEDNESS TO MS. NATASHA AKPOTI,” falsely claimed to be written on behalf of Akpoti-Uduaghan and contained allegations of financial and personal disputes.
Among its assertions were claims that Chief Uduaghan had influenced Akpoti-Uduaghan’s business decisions, subjected her to physical harm, and was responsible for financial losses she allegedly incurred.
The fraudulent document further accused Uduaghan of reneging on a marriage promise and poisoning Akpoti-Uduaghan’s food, leading to a miscarriage. It also included demands for financial compensation amounting to billions of naira.
In response, Indemnity Chamber, the legitimate solicitors of Akpoti-Uduaghan, strongly refuted the claims and stressed that the letter was a fabrication.
“This letter did not and could not have emanated from us. We urge the public to disregard this desperate attempt to spread misinformation by discredited individuals,” the firm stated.
The incident highlighted the growing issue of misinformation and the misuse of social media for spreading false narratives. Legal experts warn that those responsible for fabricating and disseminating such documents could face legal consequences.
