The National Assembly and the nation at large are in mourning following the death of Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, the Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, who passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, after a brief illness.
Rep. Onanuga, fondly called Ijaya by her colleagues and constituents, represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State.
She was a trailblazer and staunch advocate for women’s empowerment and social development, leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political landscape.
Born on December 2, 1965, Onanuga was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2019 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). During her first term, she chaired the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, championing policies that improved the lives of women and children across Nigeria.
Re-elected in 2023, she was appointed Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th Assembly, a position she held with dignity and vigor. Known for her intellect, humility, and passion, Onanuga was a staunch advocate for legislative discipline and a key figure in driving parliamentary debates.
In a statement issued by the House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., Onanuga was described as a visionary leader and a dedicated public servant. “Her impactful contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape reflected her passion for creating a better society and her tireless dedication to public service,” the statement read.
Colleagues, constituents, and dignitaries across the nation have expressed shock and sorrow over her passing. Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun described her as “a courageous leader and a compassionate voice for the people.”
Onanuga’s leadership style and policies were focused on uplifting marginalized groups, particularly women and children. Her legislative interventions in the 9th Assembly laid the groundwork for several national social development programs still benefiting Nigerians today.
As funeral arrangements are awaited, the National Assembly has pledged to honor her memory by upholding the values she stood for.
The House of Representatives has called for a special session to celebrate her life and contributions to the nation.
