Mike Okiro Bows to Court Ruling, Withdraws from Ohanaeze Ndigbo Race

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) and elder statesman Chief Mike Okiro has formally withdrawn from the race for the president general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, citing compliance with a restraining order issued by an Enugu High Court.
The race, scheduled for January 10, has been overshadowed by controversies surrounding Okiro’s eligibility based on his state of origin.
The legal challenge, spearheaded by lawyer Aloy Ejiomfor, questioned Okiro’s claim to Rivers State indigeneity, a requirement for the position.
Some factions within the Southeast argued that Okiro hails from Imo State, fueling tensions and leading to the court order barring his candidacy.

In a press briefing on Thursday night, Okiro reaffirmed his allegiance to the rule of law, emphasizing his commitment to democratic principles.

“As a law-abiding citizen and elder statesman of Rivers State extraction, I will not defy a court order, even though I have not been formally served. My withdrawal underscores my respect for the judiciary and its vital role in safeguarding democracy,” Okiro stated.

He, however, defended his Rivers State origin, calling the accusations of identity fraud baseless. “This position was zoned to Rivers State, and I am unequivocally a proud son of Egbema in Rivers State,” he asserted.

Okiro also decried the politicization of the issue, attributing it to “purveyors of hate and lawlessness.” His legal team, led by Eze Okafor & Co, has been instructed to pursue justice, ensuring his right to participate in the race is upheld in future deliberations.

“I believe in our judiciary’s ability to uphold justice and fairness. Natural justice must prevail, and I trust the courts to ensure my fundamental rights under the 1999 Constitution are not violated,” he added.

The former IGP urged his supporters across the Igbo-speaking regions of Rivers State, and his allies in Imo, Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, and Delta states, to remain steadfast in their commitment to the rule of law.

Okiro’s withdrawal has added another layer of complexity to the Ohanaeze Ndigbo leadership contest, a position considered pivotal in championing the socio-political interests of the Igbo people.

As the election proceeds, the controversy underscored the delicate balance of ethnic identity, law, and leadership in one of Nigeria’s most influential socio-cultural organizations.

US-Based Groups Slam Igbo Leaders for ‘Betrayal’ in Nnamdi Kanu’s Continued Detention

Two prominent United States-based civil society organizations, Rising Sun Foundation and Ambassadors for Self-Determination, have criticized Igbo political leaders for allegedly failing to sincerely push for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

In a strongly worded statement on Monday, jointly signed by their representatives, the groups accused governors, politicians, and Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo leaders of prioritizing personal ambitions over the collective welfare of the Igbo people.
The groups described the actions of Igbo leaders as “maramara n’ihu, gwampiti n’azu” (smiling in public, betraying in private), accusing them of covertly ensuring Kanu’s continued detention despite public declarations for his release.

“They may call for his release publicly, yet engage in backroom deals that perpetuate his incarceration,” the statement reads.
As Kanu marks 30 months in detention under the Directorate of State Security Services (DSS), the organizations acknowledged a perceived shift by President Bola Tinubu’s administration toward dialogue on his release. However, they noted that Kanu remains the only political detainee in a list of activists, including Sunday Igboho and Omoyele Sowore, who have been released.

“The selective application of justice raises serious questions about fairness and systemic issues within the Nigerian political landscape,” they noted.
The groups demanded an immediate united front from Igbo leaders in Nigeria and the diaspora, urging governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and Ohanaeze leaders to amplify efforts for Kanu’s release.

“Kanu’s detention is not just a personal tragedy—it symbolizes the broader struggle for the Igbo nation’s survival and dignity. As long as he remains imprisoned, the entire Igbo nation is held captive,” the statement emphasized.

Drawing parallels with global struggles for freedom, the CSOs highlighted the urgency of adhering to court rulings and United Nations directives mandating Kanu’s unconditional release.

“The time is ticking, and the potential for unrest is growing. If we unite, we can secure Kanu’s release and pave the way for a future marked by freedom and progress,” the statement concluded.

The Rising Sun Foundation and Ambassadors for Self-Determination have called for intensified efforts to ensure Kanu’s freedom, warning that the consequences of his continued detention could be dire for the Igbo people and the Nigerian state.

Seyi Tinubu

A U.S.-based organization, The Future Platform USA, has thrown its weight behind Seyi Tinubu as the next Governor of Lagos State, describing him as a competent and visionary leader. The group’s endorsement positions Tinubu as a strong contender for the 2027 gubernatorial elections, signaling that his journey to Alausa may already be well underway.

In a letter signed by its President, Mr. Austin Dafe, and Secretary, Dr. Ernest Ahamioje, the group lauded Tinubu’s exceptional track record in leadership, business, and philanthropy, emphasizing his readiness to lead Lagos State into a new era of progress.

“We enthusiastically endorse Seyi Tinubu as a highly qualified and competent individual for the role of Governor of Lagos State in 2027,” the statement read. “His dedication to service, exceptional work ethic, and consistent delivery of quality results are well-documented.”

The group praised Tinubu’s professional achievements, including his role as CEO of Loatsad Promomedia Ltd and his pivotal role in the merger with Promomedia in 2016 and the acquisition of E-motion Advertising Ltd. They also highlighted his educational background in Law and Corporate and Commercial Law from the University of Buckingham, which underpins his business acumen and leadership skills.

Seyi Tinubu’s humanitarian work, particularly his disaster response initiatives in Borno and food interventions in Lagos communities, was commended for bridging tribal divides and uplifting the less privileged. His active role in his father, President Bola Tinubu’s 2023 successful presidential campaign, was noted as evidence of his political savvy and dedication to national development.

The endorsement letter declared Seyi Tinubu’s intention to run for Governor of Lagos State in 2027, with plans for a formal declaration in the U.S. and a grand finale in Nigeria.

As the political terrain in Lagos begins to take shape ahead of 2027, this endorsement suggests that Seyi Tinubu is not only ready but has already laid a solid foundation for a bid to occupy Alausa, the seat of power in Lagos State.

Delta State Governor, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori, has initiated a significant cabinet reshuffle by relieving Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza of his duties as Commissioner for Information.
While the reasons behind Osuoza’s dismissal remain undisclosed, sources indicated that alleged concerns over his performance may have influenced the decision.

In the interim, the Governor has directed Charles Aniagwu, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads), to oversee the Ministry of Information alongside his current portfolio.
Aniagwu, who brings years of experience from his tenure as Chief Press Secretary and Commissioner for Information under former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, is expected to resume his dual responsibilities on Monday.

Dr. Fred Latimor Oghenesivbe, Director General of the Delta State Bureau for Orientation and Communication, confirmed that Osuoza had been briefed on the development and stated that an official announcement from the Governor would soon follow.

Political observers suggest the reshuffle reflects Governor Oborevwori’s drive to enhance the efficiency of his administration and address lingering challenges within key ministries. The move has sparked conversations within Delta State’s political circles, with many anticipating further adjustments in the Governor’s team.

Aniagwu’s appointment is seen as a strategic choice, given his extensive experience and familiarity with the workings of the Ministry of Information. His dual role is expected to streamline communication strategies while maintaining progress on rural road projects across the state.
