Former Defence Minister, Maj.-Gen. Godwin Abbe, Dies at 74

Retired Maj.-Gen. Godwin Osagie Abbe, former Minister of Defence and Interior, has died at the age of 74.
Abbe, who also served as Military Governor of Akwa Ibom and Rivers States, passed away in Abuja on Saturday after a prolonged illness.
Born on January 10, 1949, Abbe was an alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. He furthered his studies at the United States Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, Georgia, and the Ghana Armed Forces Staff College. He retired from the Nigerian Army in 1999 after an illustrious career, holding positions such as General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division and Commander, Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC).
In politics, Abbe served as Minister of Interior (2007–2009) and Minister of Defence during the administration of late President Umaru Yar’Adua.
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, described Abbe as a “legendary son of the state” and lauded his dedication, discipline, and service to the nation.
“General Abbe’s leadership as a military officer and statesman will remain a source of inspiration for generations to come,” Okpebholo stated.
Abbe’s passing marks the end of a distinguished career dedicated to Nigeria’s development and security.
