Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has reiterated his commitment to partnering with traditional rulers to address insecurity and other challenges at the grassroots level.

The Governor made this pledge during a meeting with traditional rulers from Edo North, emphasizing the vital role they play in maintaining peace and security.
Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua in a statement quoted him to have acknowledged the historical significance of traditional institutions, noting that they were the first line of defense in community security.

Governor Okpebholo highlighted his administration’s respect for traditional institutions, referencing the recent restoration of the statutory rights of the Oba of Benin. He remarked, “Royal fathers are strong instruments for internal security. My administration will work closely with you to ensure peace and development.”

He assured the traditional rulers that any encroachment on their rights would be addressed, promising to investigate grievances thoroughly.
“We will look into any issues raised, and those who have taken what belongs to you will be made to return it,” the Governor said.

In response, HRH Oba Idogu III, the Olokpe of Okpe and leader of the delegation, commended the Governor’s approach. He criticized the previous administration, led by Godwin Obaseki, for undermining traditional institutions, particularly in Akoko-Edo. “The last administration caused significant harm by granting staff of office to village heads without following due process,” he noted.

The meeting reflected Governor Okpebholo’s commitment to fostering collaboration with traditional leaders to ensure peace, stability, and development across Edo State.
