Jigawa State Boosts Revenue Collection by Over 300 Percent
By Ahmed Rufa’i, Dutse
The Jigawa State Internal Revenue Service (JIRS) has recorded a major revenue boost, increasing the state’s internal revenue collections by over 300 percent in September, according to JIRS Chairman Dr. Nasir Sabo.
Speaking in Dutse, the state capital, Dr. Sabo stated that through new innovations in tax collection, Jigawa’s monthly revenue rose from N1.2 billion in August to over N4.2 billion in September 2024. He attributed this significant growth to the strategies implemented by the agency and the support of Governor Malam Umar Namadi’s administration.
“We achieved a remarkable improvement in local revenue generation, increasing collections from N1.2 billion to N4.2 billion within a month,” Dr. Sabo said.
He explained that the revenue boost was largely due to the introduction of digital systems and electronic tax collection, which have helped to prevent revenue leakages. One of the notable reforms was the digital registration of tax payments, streamlining the collection process and enhancing accountability.
Dr. Sabo highlighted that the increase was also due to a rise in federal allocations to local governments and a new Memorandum of Understanding between JIRS and the 27 local government areas in the state.
This partnership supports tax collection coordination across the state, ensuring consistency and efficiency.
Additional factors contributing to the revenue increase according to him include a surge in state government contracts awarded in September, as well as an intensive public awareness campaign on the importance of tax compliance for community development.
He indicated thatJIRS also partnered with other revenue agencies to implement strategic initiatives, including deploying technology to combat tax avoidance, introducing software to monitor high-net-worth individuals, and training JIRS staff in areas such as tax evasion, anti-money laundering, and counter-terrorism financing.
Dr. Sabo expressed gratitude to Governor Namadi for his continued support and called on the public to embrace the new policies for the state’s development.
