The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) has issued a 7-day ultimatum to the National Assembly management, calling for immediate resolution of grievances related to salary deductions, unpaid allowances, and staff treatment.
In a meeting on October 14 at the PASAN National Assembly Chapter Office, members expressed their frustration over the management’s unfulfilled promises dating back to 2022.
The communique was signed by the Presiding Officer Comrade Odo Chris M.C and Assistant Presiding Officer Comrade Helen Ejima.
Among the key issues raised were unauthorized salary deductions related to the Contributory Pension Scheme, failure to remit tax deductions, and the non-implementation of a 50% CONLESS salary increase approved for staff in 2010.
These concerns were detailed in a communiqué signed by Presiding Officer Comrade Odo Chris M.C. and Assistant Presiding Officer Comrade Helen Ejima.
The communiqué highlighted the serious financial impact these unresolved issues have on members, especially given the rising cost of living. PASAN is calling for the full implementation of several allowances, including the ₦35,000 Federal Wage Award and a mandated 25%/35% salary increase from the federal government.
PASAN warned that if their demands are not met by October 21, 2024, they will initiate indefinite industrial action that could paralyze all legislative functions within the National Assembly.
The association also criticized management’s interference in union activities and voiced concerns over staff safety, referencing recent assaults by personnel from the Department of State Services (DSS) stationed at the National Assembly.
PASAN leadership reiterated the urgent need for reforms and transparency regarding staff welfare issues, asserting, “We cannot continue to tolerate a system that neglects our rights and well-being.”
The association said it is prepared to mobilize its members for industrial action if the National Assembly management fails to respond favorably within the designated timeframe.
