The Nigerian Senate has paid glowing tributes to Chief Dr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, a distinguished businessman, statesman, and former President of Ohanese Ndigbo Worldwide, who passed away on July 25, 2024, at the age of 82.

At plenary on Wednesday, senators reflected on the life and legacy of Iwuanyanwu, calling on the federal government to immortalize him for his immense contributions to the nation’s development.
Senator Francis Onyewuchi Ezennwa, representing Imo East, moved the motion to honor the late icon. In his speech, Senator Ezennwa described Chief Iwuanyanwu as a pillar of the Nigerian economy, politics, and media. “Chief Dr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu was not just a renowned businessman; he was a patriot and philanthropist who gave his life to the betterment of this country. His name is synonymous with integrity and nation-building,” Ezennwa remarked.

Ezennwa highlighted Iwuanyanwu’s founding of Champion Newspapers, his philanthropic efforts through the Iwuanyanwu Foundation, and his leadership in politics and cultural advocacy, particularly as the head of Ohanese Ndigbo. “His leadership of the Igbo sociocultural organization was marked by his commitment to promoting unity, peace, and development across ethnic divides. He was a true nationalist,” he said.

Senator Victor Umeh, in his tribute, emphasized Iwuanyanwu’s peace-driven approach to leadership. “Chief Iwuanyanwu was a man of diplomacy who believed in building bridges across Nigeria. His contributions to both business and politics were rooted in a deep love for national unity,” Umeh stated, also noting Iwuanyanwu’s role in the aviation and media sectors.
Senator Abdul Ningi of Bauchi Central commended Iwuanyanwu’s contributions to Nigerian sports, particularly through his founding of Iwuanyanwu Nationale Football Club, now Heartland FC. “Chief Iwuanyanwu was a passionate supporter of Nigerian sports. His efforts in football brought national pride and strengthened the unity of our people,” Ningi said, urging the federal government to honor him by naming a significant national structure after him.
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who enjoyed a close relationship with Iwuanyanwu, shared personal memories of their collaboration in football, media, and business. “Chief Iwuanyanwu was like a father to me. His guidance shaped many lives, and his legacy continues in the institutions he established,” Kalu said, while echoing calls for the federal government to immortalize Iwuanyanwu’s name.
In his closing remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio acknowledged the far-reaching influence of Chief Iwuanyanwu. “His contributions spanned business, media, politics, and sports, touching countless lives and uniting Nigerians from all walks of life. The Senate stands with his family and the entire nation in mourning his loss,” Akpabio said.

The Senate observed a minute of silence in honor of the late statesman and resolved to send a special delegation to his burial.

Senators also urged the federal government to immortalize Chief Iwuanyanwu by naming a national monument or structure in his honor, recognizing his lifelong dedication to Nigeria’s unity and progress.
