Lamido Slams Jigawa Government over shoddy response to flood disaster
By Ahmed Rufa’i, Dutse
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial candidate in Jigawa State in the 2023 governorship election, Alhaji Mustapha Sule Lamido has criticized the state government for its shoddy handling of the recent flood disaster.
Lamido, who visited affected areas and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, expressed disappointment at the lack of preparedness and inadequate response to the disaster.
“Despite advance warnings from the National Meteorological Agency (NiMet), the government failed to take necessary measures, resulting in devastating consequences.”
Lamido accused the government of neglecting its responsibility and allowing the disaster to occur.
In addition to providing donations and support to affected communities, Lamido presented a comprehensive flood prevention and control plan to the state government.
The plan, developed by experts, outlines modern techniques to combat flooding, desertification, and erosion.
The offer came after visiting the families of flood victims in Miga, Jahun, Kiyawa, and Buji local government areas.
During his visit, he expressed deep sympathy with those who lost their loved ones, as well as for the destruction of homes, livestock, and farmlands.
“It is very sad and disheartening that over 30 persons have lost their lives, about 10,000 houses destroyed, and hundreds of thousands of hectares of farmland devastated,” he lamented.
Lamido urged the government to adopt the strategies outlined in the document and take immediate action to address the situation.
He also called on Governor Malam Umar Namadi to personally visit the affected areas and IDP camps to assess the conditions firsthand.
The district heads in the affected areas expressed their gratitude for Lamido’s visit and the support he provided.
