Rehoboth Community Advancement Initiative (RECAN), a Civil Society Organization, has appealed to the mega forces behind the #EndBadGovernance planned protest to prioritise the safety and well-being of the masses particularly the vulnerable, and cancel the protest.

Executive Director of the RECAN who made the call in a statement in Lokoja urged the protest organizers to shelve the demonstration scheduled for August 1, in view of its far reaching implications.
Abaniwo in the statement urged the protesters to opt for peaceful resolution and cancel the planned protest saying that the organization was compelled to express its deep concern.
He said that while RECAN acknowledged the right to peaceful assembly, it strongly believed that the current socio-economic climate demands constructive engagement rather than embarking on protests.
Abaniwo said that the position of the organization was based on the historical backwash of protests of such magnitude which often ends in destructive confrontations.
He described protests as an ill-wind that blows no one any good and should be avoided at all costs.
“While we do understand the frustrations and grievances that have led to this planned protest, we strongly believe that Nationwide protest can never be the solution to our problems.
“We urge all stakeholders to prioritize the safety and well-being of the masses particularly the vulnerable groups by canceling the planned protest to avoid putting them in harm’s way”, he said.
The RECAN Executive Director urged the protest organizers to consider alternative, peaceful channels for expressing grievances by prioritizing dialogue and negotiation over confrontation, seeking solutions that promote national unity and progress.
He urged security agencies to prioritize the safety of lives, well-being and property of all Nigerians in their engagements by maintaining law, order and respect for human rights and dignity.
Abaniwo further enjoined Government officials to engage in inclusive, transparent, constructive dialogue and conversations in addressing grievances and pressing national issues.
“Let us choose the path of peace, understanding and collective progress for a better Nigeria, bearing in mind that, together we can build a more harmonious and prosperous nation of our collective dreams”, he added. (Ends)
