In a startling development, Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, at a church funeral service, veered dangerously off course and made a public statement rejecting the Appeal Court’s ruling in favour of Chief Edozie Njoku as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). Soludo’s stance, where he insists on recognizing Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa as the National Chairman despite the court’s decision, not only undermines the judiciary but also raises serious concerns about his commitment to the rule of law.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s position is deeply troubling. As a professor and the governor of a state, one would expect him to uphold and respect the decisions of the judiciary.
His outright dismissal of the Appeal Court’s ruling and the recognition by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is a significant affront to the principles of justice and legal processes.
The Appeal Court Ruling And Its Implications
The Appeal Court ruling that affirmed Chief Edozie Njoku as the National Chairman of APGA was a decisive moment for the party. This judgment was intended to bring clarity and stability to the party’s leadership. However, Governor Soludo’s rejection of this ruling has only served to perpetuate confusion and division within the party.

This approach not only disrespects the court’s decision but also disregards the mandate of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the body constitutionally empowered to oversee electoral processes and party leadership legitimacy.
INEC’s recognition of Chief Edozie Njoku following the Appeal Court’s ruling should have been the end of the matter. By choosing to rubbish this, Governor Soludo is not only challenging the judiciary but also undermining the electoral body’s authority. This dual affront weakens the structures that support Nigeria’s democracy.
The Importance Of Upholding The Rule Of Law
For a functioning democracy, it is imperative that all branches of government respect the rule of law. The judiciary’s independence is crucial in ensuring that justice is served without fear or favor. Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s actions can be seen as an attempt to exert undue influence over the judiciary and electoral processes, which could have far-reaching negative implications for governance in Nigeria.
The respect for judicial decisions is non-negotiable in a democratic society. When leaders like Governor Chukwuma Soludo choose to publicly rubbish and reject court rulings, it erodes public trust in the legal system and encourages a culture of lawlessness.
Olive Branch Trodden Underfoot
Even after Chief Edozie Njoku magnanimously extended an olive branch to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, the governor threw it on the dirty floor and trampled Chief Edozie Njoku’s magnanimity underfoot by making incoherent statements that present him as a non-believer in the rule of law. This kind of behavior is unacceptable from someone who is supposed to uphold justice and fairness.
A Call For Reflection And Adherence To Legal Norms
It is essential for Governor Chukwuma Soludo to reconsider his stance and align himself with the principles of justice and the rule of law. Upholding the Appeal Court’s ruling and recognizing Chief Edozie Njoku as the National Chairman of APGA is not just a legal obligation but a moral one. It demonstrates respect for the judiciary and strengthens democratic institutions.
The governor’s current position is a disservice to the people of Anambra State and Nigeria as a whole. It promotes a narrative that legal decisions can be disregarded based on personal convenience, which is dangerous for the country’s democratic future.
