By Friday Idachaba, Lokoja.
KOGI Non-Governmental Organizations Network (KONGONET) has called on Nigerians to recommit themselves to upholding democratic values and ethics as the nation celebrates 25 years of uninterrupted democratic rule.
Amb. Idris Ozovehe Muraina, Chairperson of the Network made the call in the Organizations’ message of felicitations with Nigerians, made available to newsmen on Wednesday in Lokoja.
According to the Chairperson, KONGONET reaffirmed its commitment to promoting democratic principles and good governance in the country, especially in its immediate constituency of Kogi State.
Amb. Muraina said that though the journey of democracy in Nigeria has been marked by triumphs and challenges, the nation has remained steadfast in its collective pursuit of a better and more inclusive society.
“On this significant occasion, we recognize the sacrifices made by countless individuals who fought for democracy and the rule of law in Nigeria.
“We call upon all stakeholders – government, civil society, the private sector, and the citizens – to recommit themselves to upholding democratic values and ethics for the betterment of our dear nation”, he said.
Amb. Muraina said democracy was not just a system of governance but a way of life that ensures the protection of human rights, accountability, transparency and the rule of law.
He urged all political leaders to prioritize and place the welfare and interests of the Nigerian people above personal or party agenda.
The KONGONET Chairperson held that it was imperative that democratic institutions are strengthened and the principles of Checks and Balances upheld to prevent abuse of power and ensure that the peoples’ voices are heard.
He called for the total adoption of democratic ethics of respect for diversity, tolerance, dialogue and peaceful coexistence, at all levels of the society.
“It is only through these values that we can build a truly inclusive and prosperous nation where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive.
“Together, let us work towards a future where the rights and dignity of every Nigerian are respected, and where our democracy continues to flourish for generations to come”, he said. (Ends)
