Nasarawa govt asks NYCN officials to exhibit examplary leadership
From Abel Daniel, Lafia
Nasarawa state government has urged officials of the state chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) to always exhibit exemplary leadership and good conduct
The state Commissioner of Youths and Sports Development Lucky Yargwa gave the charge in Lafia on Wednesday at the inauguration of an electoral committee to conduct the local chapters elections by leadership of NYCN in the state.
Yargwa represented by Mallam Abubakar Umar, Acting Permanent Secretary of the ministry, said giving the role NYCN plays as the umbrella body of youth councils in the state and in the country and by extension all youths, it is pivotal in moulding the character of the youths through their own conduct.
He added that when they exhibit exemplary leadership and good conduct, NYCN would be contributing immensely to the proper orientation of youths thereby making them good leaders in the future.
“We all know that the NYCN is the apex body of all youth organizations in the state. It is on this note that by the time you have a ruffle at your level, it means you are saying that of all other youths organizations.
“From what I have seen, there will be a change, a positive one for that matter. As for the electoral body, I urge you not to hesitate in making sure you come up with candidates who have no questionable character.
“So that by the time you start your full movement, no issues of litigation, accusation that will let you down will arise thereby bringing back what you supposed to have done to a zero level and only to be negotiating to start all over again,” he said.
Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Governor Abdullahi Sule on Youth Affairs Mr Shuaibu Sani, advised members of the youth body to reciprocate the gestures of support from the state government by always engaging themselves in acts that will make them examplary to other youths.
“In doing that there will be less youth restiveness and the election that you have just inaugurated a committee for will be rancour free. So the state government is counting on you to always lead by example in everything you do,” he said.
Speaking earlier, Jaafar Loko, Chairman, NYCN Nasarawa state chapter said the state executive of the council was empowered by the constitution of the council to device a democratic platform for election of local chapter officials to man the affairs of the council in the various localities for four years hence the inauguration of the electoral committee.
“The state working committee evoked the provision of section 12(3) of the council constitution to constitute 9 man electoral committee with representatives from each zone and one from the ministry of youth and sports development to conduct elections in all the 13 local government and development areas in the state.
“The committee has Mohammed Nata’ala as chairman, Akolo Alaku as secretary and Musa Danka as Public Relations Officer. Other members of the committee are Kiman Mainoma, Ganuwa Baba, Abubakar Wamba, Dorcas Damisa.
“Also in the electoral committee are Umar Rabiu, Barrister Samuel Attah while Jonathan Gabu is to represent the ministry accordingly,” he said.
Loko also listed the responsibilities of the committee to include preparation and conduct of free and fair elections, production and publication of electoral guidelines and election time table in line with the council constitution.
He added that others are to make arrangements for candidates to campaign, choose date, venues and conduct elections within the period of 35days from the date of inauguration of the electoral committee and ensure that rules guiding the conduct of the elections are strictly adhered to.
