Obi Enters 2027 Race Spotlight as NDC Begins Presidential Screening

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has officially appeared at the headquarters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Abuja as the party begins its presidential screening process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi arrived at about 6:45 p.m., dressed in his familiar black kaftan and cap, drawing significant attention from party officials and supporters already gathered at the venue. He was accompanied by Senator Victor Umeh and later submitted his nomination documents through a representative.
His appearance came shortly after the screening committee chairman, Sam Egwu, entered the venue to commence the exercise, signalling the formal start of the party’s vetting process for presidential hopefuls.
The development has further fueled political discussions within and outside the party, especially following recent adjustments to the nomination timetable and the suspension of sales of presidential forms—moves that have sparked speculation about a possible consensus arrangement.
However, both Obi’s supporters and NDC leadership have dismissed claims of any predetermined candidate, insisting the process remains open and competitive.
The party has set up a 17-member screening committee to evaluate aspirants as part of preparations for the 2027 electoral cycle.
