NDC zones 2027 presidential ticket to southern Nigeria

The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally zoned its presidential ticket for the 2027 general elections to Southern Nigeria, in a move the party says is aimed at strengthening national unity, equity and political inclusion.
The decision was reached at the party’s convention after a motion was moved by Honourable Afam Ogene, who urged delegates to adopt a zoning arrangement that reflects Nigeria’s delicate balance and long-standing principle of power rotation between the North and South.
Ogene told party members that the stability of Nigeria’s democracy depends on fair power-sharing and the orderly rotation of key political offices across regional lines.
He said the NDC’s decision was driven by the need to promote a stronger sense of belonging among all federating units and to reinforce national cohesion ahead of the 2027 elections.
Under the resolution adopted by delegates, the party’s presidential ticket for the 2027 election will remain in Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term.
The convention further resolved that upon completion of the 2031 term, the presidential ticket of the party will automatically rotate back to Northern Nigeria.
Ogene described the arrangement as a deliberate step toward national healing and a means of reducing sectional tensions in the country’s political space.
According to him, the decision also positions the NDC as a party committed to inclusiveness, cutting across age, gender, religion and regional divides.
“I so move,” he said during the presentation of the motion, which was overwhelmingly adopted through a voice vote by delegates.
The motion was seconded by Honourable Seisho Ume, who described the zoning formula as a strategic and stabilising mechanism for the party’s future electoral fortunes.
The announcement was met with applause at the convention, signalling strong internal consensus ahead of the 2027 political cycle.
