The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has formally consolidated its presidential direction for the 2027 general elections, as delegates at its National Convention in Bauchi State endorsed Prince Adewole Adebayo as the party’s consensus presidential candidate.
The decision emerged through a wave of motions moved by party leaders, including the Lagos State chairman, and seconded by state chairmen across the federation, who unanimously backed Adebayo’s candidacy in a voice vote that reflected internal unity and strategic alignment ahead of the next election cycle.
The convention, attended by delegates from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, was described by party officials as a demonstration of internal cohesion and resilience in the face of Nigeria’s increasingly competitive political landscape.
In his remarks, Convention Chairman Professor Usman Bugaje praised the conduct of delegates and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to strengthening democratic values within its ranks. However, he also issued strong criticism of national democratic institutions, alleging that bodies such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and elements within the judiciary have been compromised by political interference.
According to him, opposition parties continue to operate under what he described as a “hostile environment,” where institutions meant to safeguard democracy are instead weakened by political manipulation.
Despite these concerns, the SDP leadership maintained a tone of determination, insisting that the party remains committed to offering Nigerians a credible alternative platform ahead of 2027.
Bugaje further warned that attempts to shrink political competition would ultimately fail, drawing historical parallels to past authoritarian eras in Nigeria’s political evolution.
He stressed that the SDP would continue to operate on principles of fairness, internal democracy, and ideological discipline, positioning itself as a stable opposition force in the country’s evolving political space.
With Adebayo’s emergence as consensus candidate, the SDP now enters a new phase of consolidation, seeking to unify its structures nationwide and strengthen its electoral strategy ahead of what is expected to be a highly contested 2027 presidential race.
