Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerian workers to recognize their central role in nation-building and to actively use their collective strength to demand better governance and accountability.
In a message marking this year’s International Workers’ Day, shared via his X handle, Obi praised workers for sustaining Nigeria’s economy and social structure despite worsening economic conditions.
He noted that many workers are currently under severe financial pressure, as rising inflation, food prices, and transportation costs continue to erode the real value of wages. According to him, the prevailing minimum wage can no longer guarantee a decent standard of living for the average Nigerian worker.
Obi stressed that no nation can grow beyond the strength and wellbeing of its workforce, adding that productivity and national progress are closely tied to how well workers are treated and empowered. He warned that economic hardship among workers ultimately translates into broader national decline.
Beyond economic concerns, the former Anambra State governor also emphasized the political influence of workers. He said they are not only vital to production but also possess the power to shape leadership outcomes through informed voting and collective civic engagement.
He urged workers to support leaders who demonstrate competence, character, capacity, credibility, and compassion, while rejecting corruption, division, and poor governance.
Obi concluded by reaffirming that a fair, just, and productive Nigeria is possible, but only if workers remain actively engaged in both economic and political processes.
