The Kogi State Police Command has commenced a full investigation into the alleged torture and death of a 400-level student of the Nana College of Nursing and Medical Sciences, Okpo, Olamaboro Local Government Area, while also declaring a manhunt for security personnel said to have fled after the incident.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, the Command said the case was reported at the Olamaboro Divisional Headquarters at about 10:30 a.m. on April 26, prompting immediate deployment of officers to the scene.
Preliminary findings indicated that at about 3:00 a.m. on the same day, a man identified as Andrew Amehson, a resident of Okpo, allegedly attempted to gain access into the school premises under circumstances yet to be fully clarified.
He was reportedly intercepted by security operatives engaged by the institution. During the ensuing confrontation, the operatives allegedly used excessive force in apprehending him.
The Police said the victim was later found unconscious and was rushed for medical attention, where he was confirmed dead by health officials.
Following the incident, investigators from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) have taken over the case. The Police confirmed that relevant exhibits have been recovered and that the identities of the suspected security personnel have already been established.
However, the Command disclosed that the suspects are currently on the run, adding that efforts are ongoing to track and arrest them.
The Police condemned the incident, describing it as a serious abuse of authority, and cautioned private security operatives, vigilante groups, and similar outfits against the use of excessive force.
It reiterated that such groups are only empowered to apprehend suspects on reasonable suspicion and must immediately hand them over to the Police rather than resorting to violence or extrajudicial actions.
Commissioner of Police, Naziru Bello Kankarofi, assured the public of a thorough and transparent investigation, stressing the Command’s commitment to justice and accountability.
He also appealed for calm, urging members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing credible information that could lead to the arrest of the fleeing suspects and ensure justice for the deceased.
