After weeks of political consultations and internal negotiations, Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally transmitted the nomination of Murtala Sule Garo to the State House of Assembly for confirmation as Deputy Governor of Kano State.
The announcement, contained in a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, confirmed that Garo emerged as the consensus choice following extensive consultations with key political stakeholders in the state.
The nomination is in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers a governor to nominate a deputy governor in the event of a vacancy. The position became vacant following the resignation of former Deputy Governor, Comrade Abdussalam Gwarzo, on March 27, 2026.
According to the statement, Garo was selected from a list of three nominees submitted by APC legacy stakeholders, including Alhassan Kabiru Rurum and Sulaiman Bichi, following intense internal deliberations.
Murtala Sule Garo, a seasoned politician and administrator, has served in various capacities over the past two decades, including as elected Local Government Chairman, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and Deputy Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 general elections. He also previously served as State Organising Secretary and Chairman of ALGON in Kano State.
The Governor’s statement described the nomination as part of broader efforts to strengthen governance and ensure effective service delivery in the state.
However, the selection process reportedly generated intense political competition within APC stakeholder blocs in Kano. While Garo reportedly enjoyed strong backing from former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and a majority of party stakeholders, opposing voices emerged from influential quarters, including the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, who was said to have supported another nominee.
Despite the internal divisions, the Governor’s final decision has now settled weeks of speculation and political tension across the state.
Political observers say the nomination could reshape the balance of influence within Kano’s political structure, as the State Assembly prepares to consider the confirmation in the coming days.
