The African Democratic Congress has taken a significant step in consolidating its structure in Kano State, electing a new set of executives at its just-concluded state congress.
At the end of the exercise, Abdullahi Maikano, aligned with the political bloc of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, emerged as State Chairman, while Ali Datti Yako, from the camp of Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, was elected Deputy Chairman.
The congress drew prominent political stakeholders across Kano’s diverse political tendencies, signalling an attempt by the party to harmonise competing interests under a single platform.
The presence of figures such as Kwankwaso and Gawuna underscored the growing importance of the ADC as a potential meeting point for political realignments in the state.
Party insiders say the emergence of the new executives—drawn from various local government areas—is part of a deliberate strategy to deepen grassroots penetration and reposition the party ahead of future elections.
A representative of the party, Senator Lawan Adamu Usman, expressed confidence that the new leadership would strengthen the ADC’s political standing in Kano and improve its electoral prospects.
More than a routine internal exercise, the Kano congress reflects broader shifts within Nigeria’s opposition landscape. With factions from different political backgrounds finding accommodation within the ADC, the party appears to be positioning itself as an alternative platform for coalition-building.
The real test, however, will be whether the newly formed leadership can sustain unity among diverse interests and translate organisational gains into electoral strength.
