The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has issued a sharp warning to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to urgently confront Nigeria’s worsening insecurity or consider resigning, following renewed deadly attacks attributed to Boko Haram and ISWAP in the North-East.
In a strongly worded statement from Abuja, the group said the reported killing of senior military officers and soldiers in Borno State reflects a disturbing escalation of terrorism and exposes serious weaknesses in Nigeria’s security system.
HURIWA warned that conflicting reports from the battlefield and official military statements are deepening public distrust, calling for greater transparency and accountability from the Armed Forces.
The association argued that under the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, insecurity has intensified, with terrorism, banditry, and communal violence spreading across multiple regions and claiming thousands of lives.
It cited repeated mass killings and attacks on civilians and security personnel as evidence of what it described as a failing national security strategy, despite government assurances of progress.
The group also raised concerns over the continued retention of service chiefs, insisting that a lack of leadership overhaul has weakened operational effectiveness and morale within the military.
HURIWA further pointed to international travel advisories issued against Nigeria as a sign of declining global confidence in the country’s security environment, warning of possible economic and diplomatic consequences.
While acknowledging presidential condolences to fallen troops, the organisation said sympathy statements are no longer enough without measurable improvements on the ground.
It called for an immediate restructuring of the security architecture, stronger intelligence coordination, and improved welfare for troops engaged in counterinsurgency operations.
HURIWA concluded that if the government cannot reverse the rising tide of insecurity, it should “make way for leadership that can protect Nigerians effectively.”
