A violent rainstorm has caused significant damage to the newly constructed Kugbo Bus Terminal by Nyesom Wike in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), triggering heavy traffic congestion along the Abuja–Keffi corridor.
The downpour, which began late Tuesday afternoon, was accompanied by strong winds that tore off sections of the terminal’s roof, scattering debris across the roadway and bringing movement to a near standstill in the area.
Commuters and motorists were stranded for hours as the obstruction forced traffic to build up rapidly, with many vehicles unable to pass through the affected stretch.
The situation was further aggravated by scavengers who arrived at the scene during the storm, carting away dislodged roofing materials despite the hazardous conditions.
The affected terminal is part of a ₦51 billion transport modernization project by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), supervised by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and commissioned in June 2025 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The project includes terminals at Kugbo, Mabushi, and the Central Business District, all designed to ease congestion and improve urban mobility in the capital. Each facility is expected to handle thousands of passengers daily and accommodate buses and taxis, with features such as waiting areas, restrooms, and CCTV security systems.
Although construction has been largely completed, the terminals are yet to commence full operations, pending Federal Executive Council (FEC) approval for a management framework.
In response to the incident, Wike ordered the deployment of security operatives to the area to prevent looting and restore order, while ensuring traffic flow was not further disrupted.
According to his aide, Lere Olayinka, the storm also affected parts of the Nyanya pedestrian bridge and nearby structures, though no fatalities or vehicle damage were recorded.
The FCT Administration has directed immediate assessment and repair of the damaged infrastructure, assuring residents of swift action to restore normalcy.
The incident has, however, raised fresh questions about the structural resilience of the terminals and the quality assurance standards applied to large-scale public projects in the capital.
