Adeyanju Warns Against ‘One-Party State’, Urges Tinubu to Rein in Anti-Democratic Forces

Rights activist, Deji Adeyanju, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently halt what he described as growing attempts to undermine Nigeria’s multiparty democracy.
In a strongly worded statement, Adeyanju urged the President to rein in “anti-democratic forces” within and around his administration, accusing some actors of using the courts to frustrate opposition parties and prevent them from fielding candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He warned that continued efforts to weaken opposition platforms, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party and the African Democratic Congress, signal what he called a dangerous drift toward a one-party state.
According to him, such actions pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic stability and could erode public trust in key institutions if left unchecked.
“The President must recognise that those advising him that a strong opposition threatens his re-election are, in fact, his greatest enemies,” Adeyanju stated.
He further called on former presidents and elder statesmen to intervene, describing the moment as “defining” for Nigeria’s democracy and urging all stakeholders to speak out against any attempt to erode political pluralism.
Adeyanju also noted that the international community is closely monitoring developments in Nigeria, warning that the country’s democratic credentials could be at risk if current trends persist.
