As Christians in Nigeria and across the world mark the Easter celebration, the Guild of Interfaith Media Practitioners Nigeria (GIMP-Nigeria) has urged Nigerians to harness the spirit of the season to deepen religious tolerance, strengthen national unity, and drive sustainable development.
In a statement issued in Abuja on April 3, 2026, the group said Easter offers more than a moment of reflection for Christians, describing it as a timely opportunity for citizens of all faiths to recommit to shared values that promote peaceful coexistence.
The statement, signed by the Director of Governmental Relations, Idris Abdullahi, stressed that Nigeria’s religious and cultural diversity should be seen as a strength rather than a fault line.
Abdullahi noted that persistent religious intolerance has, over the years, contributed to divisions, insecurity, and slowed economic progress in parts of the country, warning that such trends must be deliberately reversed.
He emphasised that fostering interfaith harmony is both a moral duty and a strategic necessity for national advancement.
“No nation can achieve meaningful socio-economic development in an atmosphere defined by suspicion, division, and conflict,” the group stated, adding that peace and mutual respect are critical ingredients for investment, innovation, and inclusive governance.
GIMP-Nigeria called on religious leaders, media professionals, civil society groups, and government institutions to use the Easter period as a platform to amplify messages of peace, dialogue, and understanding across communities.
It urged faith leaders to deliver sermons that promote compassion, tolerance, and respect for human dignity, irrespective of religious differences.
The group also underscored the influential role of the media in shaping public narratives, encouraging journalists to prioritise responsible reporting that fosters unity rather than division.
“The media must rise above sensationalism and divisive tendencies to become a unifying force in society. Through balanced and ethical reporting, we can strengthen trust and build bridges across communities,” the statement added.
GIMP-Nigeria further appealed to Nigerians—especially young people—to reject hate speech, misinformation, and extremist ideologies that threaten national cohesion.
It encouraged citizens to embody the true essence of Easter by demonstrating kindness, forgiveness, and solidarity in their daily interactions.
Reaffirming its position, the group said Nigeria’s future depends on its ability to embrace diversity and transform it into a tool for collective progress.
“Let this Easter inspire a renewed commitment to peace, dialogue, and unity. Our strength lies in our diversity, and our progress depends on how well we manage it,” the statement concluded.
