The Federal Government has ruled out any increase in electricity tariffs, saying its immediate priority is to stabilise the power sector and improve supply without imposing additional costs on consumers.

Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, gave the assurance on Wednesday in Abuja while marking his first 100 days in office.

“We have no plan to increase electricity tariffs,” Tegbe said, stressing that the position was not a political statement.

Instead, he said the government was focusing on improving generation, settling sector debts, strengthening transmission and expanding electricity metering.

Tegbe said power generation reached 5,330 megawatts (MW) in August and September, up from between 3,700MW and 4,700MW before June.

He said the government had also mobilised about ₦1.23 trillion to address part of the power sector’s estimated ₦3.3 trillion debt burden.

According to him, the intervention is expected to improve liquidity and strengthen the ability of operators to sustain generation and supply.

The minister also announced the return of the 375MW Alaoji power plant to the national grid after three years offline.

He said newly commissioned transformers at Apapa, Ijora, Alausa and Lekki had unlocked 672MW of transmission capacity, while a new 300MVA transformer at Katampe, Abuja, added another 240MW.

The government, he added, had facilitated the release of more than 300 containers of critical power equipment stranded at the ports.

On metering, Tegbe said about 350,000 meters had been installed during his first 100 days, bringing total installations to 1,004,260 as of August 2026.

He said the resolution of the AMMON litigation had also cleared the way for the procurement of about 1.4 million smart meters.

Another 90,000 meters, he said, had been installed in military formations, while 5,000 young Nigerians were undergoing training as smart-meter installers under the Power Force programme.

Tegbe, however, acknowledged that higher national generation does not automatically translate into reliable electricity for every community.

“National progress can coexist with an unreliable feeder in a particular community,” he said, stressing the need to extend improvements across the country.

On renewable energy, the minister said 62 solar and mini-grid projects had been completed across 30 states, providing about 43.6MW of solar capacity and more than 41,700 new connections.

He also announced the launch of the Renewable Asset Management Company, which he said would manage publicly financed renewable assets and seek to raise ₦3 trillion over the coming years.

Tegbe said the next six months would focus on turning the reforms and repairs undertaken during his first 100 days into more visible improvements in electricity supply.

He identified the Lagos, Enugu-Port Harcourt and Abuja-Kaduna-Kano transmission corridors as priorities for grid stabilisation.

The minister also pledged greater transparency through performance scorecards, publication of project costs and operator performance, accelerated metering and stronger action against vandalism and electricity theft.

“It’s been 100 days on this assignment. This is not to say that we have reached our destination, not at all. But we have made modest progress,” he said.

Tegbe urged Nigerians to continue scrutinising the power sector while calling on communities to protect electricity infrastructure.

He said electricity reform should benefit all Nigerians regardless of their political affiliation or location.
