A fresh crisis has erupted in the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress following the expulsion of former Agege Local Government chairman, Ganiyu Egunjobi, and Azeez Yusuf, over their defection to the Allied Peoples Movement.
The APC accused the duo, who contested its House of Assembly primaries, of anti-party activities and disloyalty after they subsequently secured APM tickets for the same constituencies.
Egunjobi contested the APC ticket for Agege Constituency I, while Yusuf contested Agege Constituency II.
The two later emerged as APM candidates after disputing the outcome of the APC primaries.
Lagos APC Chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, said the party invoked Article 9(5)(II) of its amended constitution to expel the two.
He said members who lose internal contests are expected to accept the outcome or seek redress through the party’s recognised channels rather than move to another party during the same electoral cycle.
The APC also rejected the men’s reported resignations, describing them as a belated attempt to avoid disciplinary action.
But Egunjobi and Yusuf immediately fired back, insisting that they resigned from the APC in July, weeks before Wednesday’s expulsion announcement.
They questioned how a party could expel people who had already resigned from its membership.
The duo said their decision to leave followed their grievances over the APC primaries, which they claimed they won but were denied recognition.
They also denied that Lagos Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, influenced their defection, saying the decision was taken independently.
The latest confrontation has deepened the political dispute over the two Agege Assembly seats ahead of the 2027 elections.
The APC has since declared that Egunjobi and Yusuf are no longer members of the party and have no authority to speak or transact business on its behalf.
