Amagba community in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State is facing the consequences of rapid growth, with its expanding population and commercial activities putting pressure on basic infrastructure and security services.

The challenge has prompted Senator Neda Imasuen, representing Edo South Senatorial District, to move on two critical needs — a community market and a police station.

Imasuen on Thursday broke ground for an ultra-modern market that will comprise 30 lock-up shops and 40 open stores, saying the project was designed to bring basic commodities and trading opportunities closer to residents.

But the senator’s disclosure of plans for a police station has added a security dimension to the intervention.

According to Imasuen, Amagba currently has no police station, leaving residents to depend on the Ugbor Police Station around Benson Idahosa University whenever they need police services.

He said the distance could become a serious challenge during emergencies, particularly as the community continues to expand.

“There’s no police station in Amagba at all,” Imasuen said.

The senator said he would facilitate the construction of a police station to serve Amagba and neighbouring communities that also lack adequate access to policing.

“Amagba has come of age and the population has increased tremendously. Even the economic activities have also picked up. And so we need a police station to be able to address the needs of the people around here,” he said.

The market project, meanwhile, is intended to address a different consequence of the community’s expansion.

Imasuen said residents, particularly traders and women involved in small businesses, currently face the inconvenience of travelling outside the community to purchase or sell basic goods.

He said establishing a market within Amagba would reduce that burden while creating additional opportunities for local commerce.

The project is being executed as a federal constituency intervention and attracted community leaders, including the Amagba Landlords Association and the Odionwere of the community.

The Project Manager, Engr. Hassan Bakr Shugaba, gave residents another reason to expect quick results, assuring that the market would be completed within one month.

Chairman of the Amagba Landlords Association, Dr Vincent Abah, said the community still lacked several essential amenities but welcomed the intervention as a significant beginning.

The Odionwere, Pa Joseph Iduoriyekemwen, JP, also commended the senator and called for additional development projects.

For residents of Amagba, the projects come at a time when population growth and economic expansion are exposing infrastructure gaps that were less pressing when the community was smaller.

The emerging challenge is therefore no longer simply about accommodating more residents, but ensuring that basic commerce and security infrastructure keep pace with Amagba’s transformation.
