The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into allegations surrounding a 13-year-old deaf and non-speaking girl who reportedly became pregnant while staying with the family of a serving Army captain in Taraba State.
The teenager was reportedly in the care of Captain Etim Essien’s family after his wife, identified as Blessing, took custody of her to enable her to attend school.
The case has now attracted the attention of Taraba State authorities, including the Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Development, as well as the National Human Rights Commission.
The Army said it was investigating the circumstances surrounding the allegation involving Essien, who is attached to the Headquarters of 3 Division, Jos, Plateau State.
The Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Division, Lt. Col. Olumide Victor Olukoya, confirmed the investigation in a statement on Saturday.
Olukoya said the Army was aware of reports circulating online and had initiated steps to establish the facts surrounding the allegation.
He said the military viewed allegations of sexual abuse involving minors and vulnerable persons with utmost seriousness.
However, the Army urged restraint, stressing that the investigation had not established the culpability of any individual.
“As the allegation is currently under process of investigation, it would be inappropriate to make definitive comments on the culpability or otherwise of any individual at this stage,” the Army said.
The military also said relevant civil authorities were investigating the matter and assured that it would cooperate with them.
According to the Army, the investigation would be guided by due process, fairness and respect for the rights and dignity of all parties involved.
It added that any personnel found to have acted against the law or established military regulations would be dealt with appropriately.
The Army further appealed to the public to avoid spreading unverified information capable of compromising the investigation or exposing the minor to further harm.
It said updates would be provided when appropriate, subject to legal requirements and the integrity of the investigation.
