The Confederation of African Football has stripped Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, officially awarding the championship to Morocco.
The ruling comes after a dramatic final, where Senegalese players walked off the pitch in protest over a late penalty awarded to Morocco. CAF confirmed that Senegal had forfeited the match, recording a 3-0 victory in Morocco’s favor.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation emphasized that its challenge was to enforce competition rules, not to question the teams’ performances. The controversial penalty, awarded in the 24th minute of added time, triggered a 20-minute halt and a tense standoff between players and officials.
Earlier, Senegal had initially defeated Morocco 1-0 in extra time during the January final, courtesy of Pape Gueye’s decisive goal. The reversal underscores the critical role of regulations and discipline in African football, while stadium security managed to contain agitated fans during the tumultuous climax.
CAF’s decision marks a historic and contentious moment, sparking debate across the continent about fairness, enforcement, and the integrity of the tournament.
