Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, may turn to alternative energy solutions if the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) fails to fix chronic power outages on campus.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Salisu Ogbo Usman raised the concern during a meeting with AEDC officials, highlighting the disruptive impact of unstable electricity on students, lecturers, and staff. He noted that discrepancies exist between AEDC’s reports and on-the-ground realities experienced across the university.
Prof. Usman stressed PAAU’s significance to Anyigba’s growth and to AEDC’s customer base, adding that unreliable power has forced some staff to relocate in search of stability. Despite a previous investment in a dedicated power line, outages persist. “Electricity supply on campus remains highly irregular, sometimes lasting only a few hours and occasionally disappearing for several days,” he said.
The VC warned that the university could partner with the Rural Electrification Agency to establish a mini-grid or deploy solar power if improvements are not made.
AEDC Anyigba Manager, Mr Benjamin Monday, explained that the outages result from damaged lines, falling trees, heavy-duty vehicles, and limited power allocation to Kogi East.
Both sides pledged to improve collaboration and ensure a more reliable electricity supply for the university community.
