The Tinubu Northern Women Support Group (TNWSG) has announced a new economic empowerment initiative targeting 100,000 women engaged in petty trading across Northern Nigeria.
The programme, unveiled following a meeting of the group in Abuja, will provide financial grants to small-scale traders across the North-East, North-West and North-Central geopolitical zones, including the Federal Capital Territory.
In a statement signed by the group’s National Coordinator, Aisha Aliyu Obalim, the initiative was described as a grassroots intervention aimed at strengthening women-led micro businesses and promoting economic independence in the region.
According to Obalim, the grants will serve as working capital for selected beneficiaries, enabling them to expand their trading activities, increase stock and improve their income.
She explained that the support is structured as a grant rather than a loan, with the intention of helping traders grow their businesses without the burden of repayment.
The programme will operate under a cluster model in which beneficiaries will be organised into groups of 50 traders, each supervised by a designated cluster leader responsible for monitoring business progress and ensuring accountability.
Obalim said the structure would allow the group to track the impact of the funds and ensure they are invested directly into petty trading enterprises.
The initiative, she added, also reflects the group’s support for the policy direction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and seeks to complement efforts to promote inclusive economic growth under the administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.”
She noted that empowering women traders represents a strategic investment in the region’s informal economy, where many households depend on small-scale commerce for survival.
The group said the empowerment programme is expected to stimulate local commerce, strengthen women’s financial capacity and contribute to broader economic development across Northern Nigeria.
TNWSG added that it would closely supervise the rollout of the initiative to ensure the grants produce measurable improvements in the livelihoods of beneficiaries and their communities.
