Tinubu Inaugurates Committee to Drive New Power Grid Asset Company

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has inaugurated an 11-member committee to facilitate the establishment of the Grid Asset Management Company Limited (GAMCO), a proposed entity aimed at improving power transmission and addressing Nigeria’s persistent stranded electricity capacity.
The committee was set up following approval by the Federal Executive Council for the creation of the company as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s power sector.
Speaking at the inauguration in Abuja on Friday, the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, who represented Tinubu, said the initiative forms a key part of the administration’s strategy to reform electricity infrastructure and optimise the national grid.
He explained that the panel would review existing laws, policies and institutional frameworks governing Nigeria’s electricity value chain to ensure the smooth incorporation and effective operation of GAMCO.
The committee is also expected to examine the implications of the Electricity Reform Laws 2025 on asset ownership, regulatory oversight and the management of power generation, transmission and distribution assets.
Part of its assignment includes evaluating the legal status and contractual obligations of assets under the Niger Delta Power Holding Company and the National Integrated Power Project, particularly facilities such as the Omotosho, Olorunshogo and Ihovbor power plants that may serve as pilot projects for GAMCO.
The panel will further assess how the proposed company would interface with the regulatory functions of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and determine the fiscal and market implications of the plan, including subsidy exposure and revenue frameworks.
Gbajabiamila chairs the committee, which also includes the Attorney-General of the Federation, ministers overseeing power, works and finance, as well as officials from communications, science and aviation ministries. The Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service and energy law expert Yemi Oke are also members.
The committee is expected to recommend whether amendments to existing legislation and regulatory frameworks will be required for the successful launch and operation of GAMCO.
