Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has warned Nigerians against reversing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms, arguing that policy continuity is critical to achieving lasting recovery.
Bello made the argument while urging Nigerians to support Tinubu for a second term in the 2027 presidential election.
The former governor said some of the decisions taken by the Tinubu administration had created immediate economic pressure but were intended to address problems that had accumulated over many years.
He argued that changing course whenever reforms become difficult could prevent the country from benefiting from policies that require time to produce results.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu deserves the support of Nigerians because he has demonstrated the courage to take responsibility at a difficult period in our national history,” Bello said.
According to him, Nigeria cannot resolve longstanding economic and security challenges through short-term measures or frequent policy changes.
Bello said the Renewed Hope Agenda should be given sufficient time to achieve its objectives, particularly in strengthening the economy, improving institutions and expanding opportunities for young Nigerians.
“We must learn to look beyond immediate political considerations. Nation-building is not a one-day assignment. Important reforms require patience, consistency and the opportunity for those entrusted with leadership to complete the work they have started,” he said.
He also praised the Federal Government’s approach to tackling insecurity, citing intelligence-led operations and cooperation between federal and state authorities.
Bello acknowledged that Nigerians were still facing serious challenges but urged citizens to remain focused on the country’s long-term prospects.
He said the 2027 election would offer voters an opportunity to decide whether the current direction of government should continue.
The former governor also urged political leaders to place national interest above personal ambition and partisan differences.
“President Tinubu should be allowed to continue the work he has begun. Nigeria needs stability, consistency and leadership that is prepared to take difficult decisions in the interest of future generations,” Bello said.
Bello’s call for continuity comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 general election intensify, with parties and political figures positioning themselves for the contest.
