Tinubu presides over Police Council meeting to confirm Olatunji Disu as IGP

President Bola Tinubu on Monday led a critical meeting of the Nigeria Police Council at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, in a decisive step to formalise the appointment of Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, as the substantive head of the Nigeria Police Force.
The closed-door session, which commenced followed the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun. Disu has been steering the Force in an acting capacity since late February, and the Council’s approval will pave the way for the President to forward his nomination to the Senate for constitutional confirmation.
High-profile attendees include Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Minister of Police Affairs Ibrahim Gaidam, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, and several state governors alongside other statutory members.
Established under the Police Act 2020, the Council provides strategic oversight of the Force. It advises the President on internal security policy, budgeting, police administration, and senior appointments, ensuring major decisions follow due process without interfering in day-to-day operations.
The timing of the meeting underscored the urgency of stable leadership in Nigeria’s policing architecture, as the country continues to face complex security challenges.
Analysts note that confirming Disu is expected to ensure continuity in ongoing reforms, strengthen institutional efficiency, and boost public confidence in the Force.
By formalising Disu’s appointment, the administration signals its determination to consolidate reforms, reinforce operational discipline, and maintain momentum in tackling crime and insecurity across the nation.
