The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has celebrated the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim, with the “Trailblazer in Women Political Representation” award, recognising her outstanding efforts in advancing women’s participation and leadership in Nigerian politics.
In presenting the award, NAWOJ Vice President Zone D, Mrs Chizoba Ogbeche, lauded the Minister’s unwavering commitment to empowering women and promoting their political visibility.
She recalled the warm reception Suleiman-Ibrahim received from Ministry staff and women’s groups, reflecting high expectations for economic and socio-political empowerment initiatives under her leadership.
Ogbeche also commended the Minister for her hands-on role in the sensitive case of Walida Abdullahi, a young woman at the centre of a public controversy. She praised Suleiman-Ibrahim for ensuring the protection of the young woman and her child while managing public concerns responsibly. “Every girl-child has the right to life, education, and protection,” Ogbeche said, noting the Ministry’s consistent advocacy on these rights.
The NAWOJ vice president emphasised that the Minister’s leadership represents a significant milestone in women’s representation and noted that during the Association’s 65th Independence Celebration in Lafia, Nasarawa State, the decision was made to personally deliver the award to her, rather than sending a representative.
In her remarks, Minister Suleiman-Ibrahim expressed gratitude for the recognition and reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening partnerships with women journalists to drive national development goals. She encouraged the media to handle sensitive cases with care, avoiding undue exposure of individuals involved.
Highlighting President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of 2026 as the “Year of Family and Social Development,” the Minister described it as a historic moment for women and families, reflecting deliberate efforts to remove systemic barriers affecting their progress. She further reiterated the Ministry’s dedication to collaborating with women journalists as strategic allies in promoting family values and safeguarding the rights and dignity of women and girls.
