The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Hakeem Fawehinmi, has stressed that transparency in payroll administration is essential for strengthening trust between university management and staff.
Speaking at an in-house training workshop organised by the institution’s Bursary Department in Abuja, Fawehinmi highlighted the importance of clear tax deductions and accurate remittances under the New Tax Act 2025. The workshop focused on equipping staff with practical knowledge of payroll processes, Pay As You Earn (PAYE), and broader public sector financial management requirements.
According to him, public institutions must not only comply strictly with statutory provisions but also ensure their internal systems reflect accountability and fairness. He noted that a proper understanding of tax laws would help reduce computational errors, prevent avoidable disputes, and reinforce confidence in the university’s financial processes.
Fawehinmi warned that failure to align with evolving national tax reforms could expose institutions to sanctions, financial liabilities, and reputational risks. He described the training as both preventive and strategic, aimed at safeguarding the university’s operations.
The Vice-Chancellor commended the Bursary Department for initiating the workshop and encouraged participants to apply the knowledge gained to enhance payroll efficiency. The session, held at the university’s Main Campus, drew representatives from key administrative units and labour unions to promote transparency and shared understanding of statutory obligations.
