The Registrar of the National Examinations Council (NECO), Prof. Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, has been elected Vice-President of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA).

The development came as Nigeria secured the right to host the 2027 AEAA Conference in Abuja from August 16 to 20, 2027.

According to a statement by NECO’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani, the decisions were taken at the 42nd General Assembly Conference of the AEAA in Arusha, Tanzania.

Sani said Wushishi’s election followed his service on the AEAA Executive Council as representative of the West African sub-region.

He said the election and hosting right reflected Nigeria’s growing role in educational assessment, especially as the sector faces the challenges of digital transformation and the use of artificial intelligence in testing and certification.

Sani added that since Wushishi became NECO Registrar in 2021, he had introduced reforms aimed at modernising examination administration, improving technology and expanding the council’s international presence.

He said NECO examinations are now conducted in eight foreign countries.

The 2027 conference is expected to bring policymakers, researchers, examination administrators and education experts from across Africa to Nigeria.

Wushishi, who was born in Wushishi, Niger State, on April 5, 1965, is a scholar of Science Education with a specialisation in Chemistry Education.

Before becoming NECO Registrar, he held several academic and administrative positions at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, and the Federal University of Technology, Minna.

His reappointment as NECO Registrar for a second term by President Bola Tinubu earlier this year was also seen as support for his reforms at the council.

The latest development is expected to further strengthen Nigeria’s role in educational assessment across Africa.
