Gunfire Erupts in Benin as Obi, ADC Chiefs Escape Assassination Scare

Tension gripped Benin City on Tuesday after gunmen reportedly opened fire on the convoy of former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in what his media office described as a brazen attack on opposition figures.
The incident occurred shortly after a high-profile political event in which Olumide Akpata formally declared for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
According to a statement issued by Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), the former Anambra State governor and senior ADC leaders were trailed by armed men from the party’s secretariat in Benin to the residence of former Edo State governor, John Odigie-Oyegun.
Gunshots were allegedly fired at the entrance gate of the residence, sending supporters and residents into panic. Several vehicles in the vicinity were reportedly damaged during the chaos.
POMR described the development as a “direct and alarming assault” on political actors participating in lawful democratic activities.
Despite the scare, Obi and other ADC leaders were confirmed unharmed.
The former governor was said to have briefly addressed supporters after the incident, expressing concern that violence could erupt at the home of a respected elder statesman.
The media office linked the attack to what it called a pattern of rising political hostility, recalling previous tensions associated with Obi’s visits to Edo State.
As of press time, the Nigeria Police Force had not issued an official statement confirming the attack or announcing any arrests.
The incident has heightened concerns among political observers and civil society groups, who warn that escalating violence could undermine public confidence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Security agencies are expected to launch a full investigation to identify those responsible and prevent further breakdown of law and order in the state.
