President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and appointed Olatunji Disu as his replacement.
The decision, announced on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, marked a significant leadership change at the helm of the Nigeria Police Force.
Though official confirmation was still being awaited at the time of filing this report, sources within the Presidency and the police high command indicated that formal communication would be issued shortly.
Before his appointment, Disu served as Commissioner of Police in charge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He was recently promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) and redeployed to head the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Lagos.
His elevation to the top police position signals a new phase in the leadership of the force, particularly at a time of heightened national security concerns and ongoing reforms within the policing system.
Egbetokun, born on September 4, 1964, was due for retirement in September 2024 upon attaining the mandatory retirement age. However, he received an extension from President Tinubu, allowing him to remain in office beyond his statutory retirement date.
His removal now brings an abrupt end to his tenure as the nation’s chief law enforcement officer.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful as of press time.
The development is expected to generate reactions within political and security circles as stakeholders assess the implications of the leadership transition for policing and internal security across the country.
