INEC Ready to Conduct Kano Assembly By-Elections, Urges Voter Participation

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Kano residents that it is fully prepared to conduct the forthcoming House of Assembly by-elections in Kano Municipal and Ungogo Local Government Area constituencies.
The by-elections became necessary following the unfortunate deaths of the lawmakers representing the two constituencies, creating vacancies in the state legislature. The exercise is aimed at restoring fair representation and strengthening grassroots democracy in Kano State.
Addressing journalists on Thursday, Kano State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Ambassador Abdullahi Zango, said that more than ten political parties had indicated their interest in contesting the polls. He stressed that INEC’s preparations were in top gear, and all logistics were in place to guarantee a smooth, credible, and transparent election.
“We are ready to conduct a free and fair election. All parties and candidates will enjoy a level playing field, and we urge eligible voters to come out in large numbers to exercise their democratic right,” Zango said.
The Kano REC highlighted that the by-elections offer residents an opportunity to actively participate in shaping their legislative representation and ensuring that local governance remains inclusive and responsive.
Political observers see the by-elections as a key test of INEC’s preparedness and organizational capacity ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly in one of Nigeria’s most politically significant states.
As campaigns intensify, parties and candidates are expected to engage with constituents, outlining plans to address local issues and ensure effective representation in the Kano State House of Assembly.

With INEC’s assurance of fairness and transparency, the stage is set for residents to play a decisive role in strengthening democracy at the state level.
