A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Isah Abdullahi, also known as Kunkuri, attached to Mopol 12, has reportedly taken his own life amid allegations of supplying arms and ammunition to bandits and hoodlums in Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State.
The late DSP, who headed the armoury at Mopol 12 on Paikoro Road, Minna, came under scrutiny after a routine audit of weapons and ammunition by a team of detectives from Abuja revealed significant discrepancies. Preliminary findings indicated that 13 AK-47 rifles and over 2,000 rounds of ammunition were unaccounted for.
Investigations led to the arrest of Inspector John Moses, attached to the Niger State Government House, who allegedly confessed that DSP Abdullahi supplied him with weapons and ammunition. Moses further disclosed that the arms were ultimately delivered to bandits via his brother, a local informant in Erena Community.
DSP Abdullahi was reportedly brought back from Abuja to Mopol 12 for a physical audit of the armoury, which is electronically controlled and accessible only by the DSP. During the process, he allegedly grabbed a pistol and shot himself in the head, dying instantly.
The tragedy has prompted the arrest of several officers who accompanied him, including four subordinates and other personnel facing orderly room trials for alleged negligence and dereliction of duty. A special team from the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) is reportedly guarding the armoury around the clock, pending a solution for its operation.
The Niger State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adamu Elleman, confirmed the incident, explaining that the DSP reportedly shot himself when it became apparent that the ammunition boxes were empty. He noted that an autopsy will be conducted to confirm the cause of death.
DSP Abdullahi is also reported to have owned multiple properties and vehicles in Minna.
The Public Relations Officer of the Niger State Police Command, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, added that the officer was initially arrested on December 15, 2025, over suspected illegal dealings in ammunition. The audit process, however, tragically ended with his suicide on December 16, 2025, around 2:30 pm.
Further investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the illegal arms network and the involvement of other personnel within the command.
