Former Director-General of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Earl Osaro Onaiwu, has praised Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, for what he described as a bold and impactful turnaround of the state’s health sector.
Governor Lawal recently clinched the Best Governor in the North West for Health Sector Transformation award, following marked improvements in Primary Health Care (PHC) delivery across Zamfara State.
The honour, which includes a $500,000 cash award, was presented by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, in partnership with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, in recognition of reforms that have translated into measurable gains at the grassroots.
In his commendation, Onaiwu said the award underscores Governor Lawal’s clear focus on strengthening primary healthcare, upgrading facilities, and widening access to quality medical services, particularly for women, children and underserved rural communities.
He noted that the administration’s PHC-driven approach has yielded visible improvements in service delivery and health outcomes, setting Zamfara apart as a leading example of effective health sector governance in the North West.
Onaiwu congratulated the Zamfara State Government and its people on the recognition, describing it as a testament to purposeful leadership and the power of clearly defined priorities to drive sustainable change.
He expressed optimism that Governor Lawal would build on the momentum, deepen ongoing reforms and continue to place healthcare at the centre of his development agenda for the benefit of all residents of the state.
