    A major fire outbreak on
Thursday engulfed a commercial building housing a branch of Polaris Bank on Broad Street, Lagos Island, triggering panic among residents, workers and business owners in the area.
The blaze, which reportedly started in the afternoon, sent thick plumes of smoke into the sky as emergency responders rushed to the scene to contain the inferno and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures in the densely populated business district.
As of the time of filing this report, details surrounding the cause of the fire remained unclear, while authorities had yet to confirm whether there were casualties or injuries resulting from the incident.
Eyewitnesses said firefighters and other emergency personnel were seen battling the flames as concerned onlookers gathered around the area. Some businesses within the vicinity were reportedly shut down temporarily as a precautionary measure.
Officials from relevant emergency management agencies were also said to be assessing the extent of damage caused by the fire.
The affected building houses a branch of Polaris Bank and other commercial offices, raising concerns over potential losses to property and business operations.
Authorities have urged members of the public to avoid the area to allow emergency responders unhindered access as efforts continue to bring the situation under control.
