Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has lauded former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, describing him as a symbol of selfless leadership and national service as he marks his 84th birthday.
Obi made the remarks while joining other eminent Nigerians at the public presentation of books documenting Abdulsalami’s life, public service, and enduring contributions to Nigeria and Africa.
Reflecting on the former military leader’s role in the nation’s history, Obi said Abdulsalami demonstrated rare patriotism and statesmanship by successfully guiding Nigeria through one of its most delicate political transitions, paving the way for the return to democratic rule in 1999.
He noted that the elder statesman’s conduct during that period remains a lasting lesson in responsible leadership, sacrifice, and commitment to national stability.
According to Obi, Abdulsalami’s legacy extends beyond his time in office, as his dedication to peace, dialogue, and nation-building continues to earn him respect across generations and political divides.
He urged Nigerians, particularly those in positions of authority, to draw inspiration from the former Head of State’s example, stressing that leadership should be defined by service to the people and the strength of institutions rather than personal power.
Obi also offered prayers for Abdulsalami’s continued good health, wisdom, and strength, expressing hope that he would remain a source of guidance and inspiration to the nation.
