Nigerian Air Force Thwarts Benin Coup Attempt, Pilot Evades Attack

In a dramatic turn of events, Nigerian fighter jets played a decisive role in halting the recent coup attempt in the Benin Republic, sources confirmed on Monday.
Coup plotters reportedly attempted to shoot down a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) jet flying over Cotonou, but the pilot skillfully evaded the attack, ensuring the mission’s success.
Video footage shared on social media by security analyst Zagazola Makama showed the jet’s evasive maneuvers as it intercepted the fleeing plotters, who were escaping in armoured vehicles. The operation, authorized by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, included precision aerial strikes aimed at disabling the vehicles and blocking escape routes, effectively neutralizing the threat.
Eyewitnesses in Cotonou reported hearing multiple explosions in strategic locations, underscoring the operation’s effectiveness. Officials confirmed that the intervention was carried out with the approval of Beninese authorities and adhered strictly to international protocols, with no collateral damage recorded.
The coup, led by Lt. Pascal Tigri, involved a brief attempt to seize control of state institutions. Nigerian forces, working in coordination with loyal Beninese troops, successfully restored order at the presidential palace and surrounding areas.
A source involved in the operation stated:
“The mission was meticulously planned. Our objectives were to neutralize fleeing hostile elements, prevent regrouping, and restore stability in coordination with regional partners.”
The swift Nigerian intervention demonstrated the country’s commitment to regional stability and the defense of democracy in West Africa, highlighting the effectiveness of cross-border cooperation in responding to emerging security threats.
