The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has remained focused, vibrant, and result-driven under the leadership of its Managing Director, Hon. Bola Oyebamiji, an economist, Dr. Meshach Musa, has said.
In a statement released on Sunday in Lokoja, Dr. Musa commended the NIWA management for its renewed commitment to safety, efficiency, and staff welfare across its 23 operational bases nationwide.
He noted that since assuming office, Oyebamiji has recorded significant progress — notably in reducing accidents on the nation’s waterways and distributing more than 45,000 standard life jackets to Nigerians in 12 states.
“Under the current management, NIWA has experienced a new sense of direction. The Lokoja headquarters now reflects a modern, functional work environment that truly motivates the workforce,” Musa stated.
He recalled that about a year ago, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Gboyega Oyetola, alongside Kogi State Deputy Governor, Salifu Joel Oyibo, inaugurated key projects including security patrol boats, an administrative building, a staff clinic, and a security post — all under Oyebamiji’s watch.
According to him, NIWA has also prioritized staff welfare through prompt salary payments, regular training, educational grants, and improved medical support for retirees — a gesture he described as “a clear sign of responsible leadership.”
Beyond internal reforms, Musa said the Authority has maintained a strong relationship with its host community by offering employment opportunities, industrial attachments, and free use of facilities for social and corporate functions.
He added that NIWA’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives have touched several states, with thousands of life jackets donated to governments and communities, including Kogi State.
“NIWA continues to respond swiftly to valid requests from individuals and communities, reflecting its people-centered approach,” he said.
Musa expressed confidence that the Authority will sustain its partnership with Nigerians and other stakeholders in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, while keeping Lokoja at the heart of its operations.
